North Chennai is set to see another important infrastructure upgrade, with construction work beginning for a new flyover across the RK Nagar Railway Level Crossing in New Washermenpet. The project is being carried out between Vaidyanathan Flyover and RK Nagar Junction, a busy stretch used by motorists travelling towards Korukkupet, Tondiarpet, IOCL Junction and nearby areas.
To support the construction work, the Greater Chennai Traffic Police has announced traffic diversions from June 6, 2026 onwards.
New Flyover Planned Across RK Nagar Railway Level Crossing
The new flyover is planned across the RK Nagar Railway Level Crossing in New Washermenpet, one of the important traffic points in North Chennai. The work is expected to reduce delays caused by railway gate closures and improve movement between nearby neighbourhoods once completed.
The project area lies between Vaidyanathan Flyover and RK Nagar Junction, connecting traffic movement towards Korukkupet, Tondiarpet, New Washermenpet and IOCL Junction.
Traffic Diversions from June 6, 2026
As construction work begins, vehicles using this stretch will have to follow alternative routes. The diversions are aimed at reducing congestion near the work zone and allowing construction activity to proceed safely.
Motorists travelling from IOCL Junction towards Korukkupet have been asked to follow this route:
IOCL Junction → Vaidyanathan Flyover (left turn) → TH Road → Korukkupet Junction.
Route Changes for Light Motor Vehicles
Light Motor Vehicles heading towards IOCL Junction from the RK Nagar New Flyover side must follow this route:
RK Nagar Junction → Korukkupet Railway Gate → TH Road → Vaidyanathan Flyover → IOCL Junction.
Vehicles moving towards IOCL Junction through Meenambal Flyover can follow either of these routes:
Route 1: Meenambal Flyover → KNS Depot (Right Turn) → IOCL Junction
Route 2: Meenambal Flyover → RK Nagar Junction (Left Turn) → Chunnambu Kalvai Road → IOCL Junction
Diversion for Buses and Heavy Vehicles
Buses and heavy vehicles travelling towards IOCL Junction through Moolakothalam should follow this route:
Moolakothalam → Mint Junction → Left Turn → Kannan Roundabout → TH Road → Vaidyanathan Flyover → IOCL Junction
Light Motor Vehicles coming from the Moolakothalam side should follow:
Moolakothalam → RK Nagar Junction → Left Turn → Chunnambu Kalvai Road → Annai Sathya Nagar → Right Turn → IOCL Junction
Areas Likely to See Traffic Changes
The main affected routes include:
Vaidyanathan Flyover – RK Nagar Junction – Korukkupet – IOCL Junction
Traffic changes may also be felt around:
New Washermenpet
Korukkupet
Tondiarpet
TH Road
Mint Junction
Kannan Roundabout
Chunnambu Kalvai Road
Annai Sathya Nagar
Moolakothalam
Commuters using these routes should plan their travel in advance, especially during peak hours.
North Chennai’s Ongoing Bridge Infrastructure Push
The RK Nagar flyover work comes at a time when North Chennai has been seeing multiple railway overbridge-related projects. Earlier, the Korukkupet-Manali Road railway overbridge at the 2B level crossing was inaugurated, and another overbridge at the 2A railway crossing on Ennore High Road was also announced.
These projects are part of a larger effort to improve movement across busy railway crossings and reduce traffic delays in North Chennai.
What Commuters Should Do
Motorists should follow the diversion boards placed along the affected routes and cooperate with traffic police personnel. Since construction-related diversions can cause slower traffic movement, commuters using RK Nagar, Korukkupet, Washermenpet and IOCL routes should start earlier or choose alternate roads wherever possible.
Conclusion
The new flyover across the RK Nagar Railway Level Crossing is an important infrastructure project for North Chennai. While traffic diversions may cause short-term inconvenience, the project is expected to improve long-term connectivity around New Washermenpet, Korukkupet, Tondiarpet and IOCL Junction.
For now, commuters should watch for traffic updates, follow official diversion routes and avoid unnecessary delays near the construction zone.
