Chennai’s Road Network Gets a Boost

Chennai is set to ease long-standing traffic snarls with two key infrastructure projects — a high-level bridge at Nolambur–Sannathi 1st Cross Street and the Ezhil Nagar Road Over Bridge (ROB) in North Chennai. Together, these bridges target major choke points, connecting communities more efficiently and reducing travel delays.

Nolambur–Sannathi 1st Cross Street Bridge: Linking West Chennai Better

  • Location & Scope: Connects Nolambur/Chinna Nolambur with Poonamallee High Road & Union Road via Sannathi 1st Cross Street, across the Cooum River.
  • Specifications: About 120 m long, 12 m wide, with a 7.5 m carriageway and 2.5 m footpaths on both sides.
  • Cost & Land: Sanctioned under G.O.(Ms).No.470, with a reported cost of ₹31.65 crore. Roughly 4,396 sq.m of land was acquired for approaches.
  • Impact: Eliminates detours during monsoon flooding, cutting long travel loops between Mogappair, Maduravoyal, and Poonamallee High Road.
  • Status: Civil works are complete, and the bridge is ready for inauguration, with roadside park landscaping underway.

Ezhil Nagar ROB: Ending Long Waits at Level Crossings

  • Location & Need: Built at Korukkupet/Ezhil Nagar in North Chennai, where up to 50,000 vehicles daily are held up at a busy railway gate.
  • Structure: A bow-string girder railway over-bridge executed on a 50:50 cost-share model — Railways handle the superstructure, while GCC builds the approaches.
  • Cost: Estimated at ₹105 crore.
  • Challenges: Originally set for completion by mid-2025, delays in launching the bow-string girder pushed deadlines further.
  • Current Progress: GCC has finished black-topping, street lighting, and approaches. The remaining railway work is awaited before opening.

Why These Bridges Matter

  • Faster Commutes: Reduced congestion on arterial stretches and local connectors.
  • Flood Resilience: Nolambur bridge offers reliable passage during monsoons.
  • Economic Impact: Improves freight and commuter flow around Maduravoyal, Tondiarpet, and industrial corridors.
  • Urban Equity: Brings relief to residents in Nolambur, Chinna Nolambur, and North Chennai who have long faced bottlenecks.

Verified.RealEstate Insight

For property buyers and investors, infrastructure upgrades directly raise accessibility and land value. With the Nolambur and Ezhil Nagar bridges nearing readiness, nearby residential layouts and commercial plots are likely to see increased demand.
Before investing, always verify documents like Patta, EC, and Layout Approval using Verified.RealEstate tools — connectivity is valuable, but only when paired with clear legal titles.
