Wait Continues for Modern Drainage in Tambaram

Residents of Chitlapakkam, Sembakkam, and Madambakkam will have to wait a little longer for a cleaner neighborhood. The Tambaram City Municipal Corporation has paused its massive ₹585 crore underground sewage project. Even though the planning is done and companies have applied for the work, the project cannot move forward right now because of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) for the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.

What is the ₹585 Crore Plan?

This project is designed to fix long-standing drainage issues in the southern parts of Chennai. The main goals include:

  • Longer Pipelines: Building a 267 km long network of underground pipes to carry waste away from homes.
  • New Treatment Plant: Setting up a big facility in Pazhathottam that can clean 35 million litres of sewage every single day.
  • Saving the Lake: The biggest benefit is protecting Madambakkam Lake. Right now, dirty water often leaks into the lake; this project will stop that entirely.

The Current Problem:

Tankers and Fines Because there is no underground system yet, people have to use septic tanks. Currently, 49 licensed tanker trucks are used to collect sewage and take it to treatment centers.

However, not everyone follows the rules. During a recent check, officials found that over 50 houses were letting their dirty water flow into open street drains. These homeowners have been given legal notices and may face fines. To help in the meantime, the government is building special “interceptor drains” to keep the lake water as clean as possible until the big project starts.

The interceptor drain is built along the edge (periphery) of the lake. It catches this “dirty” runoff before it ever touches the lake water. They are often designed as “peripheral interceptor drains,” which means they run parallel to the lake’s boundary. They ensure that while the lake still gets its natural water from clean sources, the polluted water from the streets is “intercepted” and sent elsewhere.

When Will Work Start?

The project isn’t cancelled—it is just on “pause.” As soon as the elections are over and the election rules (MCC) are lifted, the Corporation will pick the winning company and start the construction. Once finished, it will make the area much cleaner and likely increase property values in these neighborhoods.
