Chennai Metro’s New Operational Plan
Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is preparing a significant operational change under Phase-II to simplify long-distance metro travel across the city. At present, commuters travelling towards Anna Salai or Koyambedu are often required to change metro lines multiple times at interchange stations.
As per the latest planning update, Alandur Metro Station is being developed as a major multi-corridor transport hub, allowing smoother and faster transfers between key metro routes.
Corridor-5 Opening Plan Revised to Alandur
Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is now planning to open Corridor-5 up to Alandur by June 2026, instead of just Nandambakkam as earlier intended. This means the Red Line will start servicing passengers from the northern section earlier and give an interchange with existing lines sooner.
The earlier Phase-II plan was to roll out Koyambedu → Nandambakkam by June 2026, but strong progress on the Vadapalani → Poonamallee depot section led to reprioritizing — the aim now is Alandur by mid-year
Why Alandur Is the Preferred First Interchange
Alandur plays a critical role in Chennai Metro’s network as it is a major interchange station connecting the Green Line and the Blue Line.
Why this matters:
Alandur is a major interchange where the existing Green and Blue lines meet, so opening here first will give commuters better access to the network earlier.
This phased opening does not mark the full commissioning of Corridor-5.
This isn’t full red-line operation yet — the target is to reach Alandur first, then extend towards Sholinganallur as construction progresses later.
Extension from Sholinganallur to Alandur Proposed
Chennai Metro currently operates two corridors, while three new corridors are under construction under Phase-II.
Corridor-5 (Red Line) was originally planned to operate from Madhavaram to Sholinganallur via Koyambedu. However, under the revised operational plan, Corridor-5 trains will not terminate at Sholinganallur in the initial stages.
Instead, services are proposed to be extended up to Alandur, making it one of the most important interchange points in the Phase-II rollout. This shift allows earlier network integration even before the full corridor becomes operational.
Who Benefits From This Proposed Extension
This operational extension proposed, from Sholinganallur to Alandur, directly benefits commuters travelling from northern and western Chennai, including:
- Madhavaram
- Koyambedu
- Virugambakkam
- Valasaravakkam
Passengers from these areas will be able to reach Alandur directly on the same train, without changing lines at intermediate stations such as Sholinganallur.
Key Localities That Gain the Most
Residents from southern and central neighbourhoods gain the maximum advantage from this extension:
- Madipakkam
- Ullagaram
- Puzhuthivakkam
- Adambakkam
- Vanuvampettai
Earlier, commuters from these areas had to switch trains at Guindy, Saidapet, or Airport stations to access Anna Salai or the airport corridor.
With Corridor-5 extending to Alandur:
- Passengers can directly reach Alandur
- From Alandur, they can seamlessly interchange to:
- Airport Metro Line
- Anna Salai–bound Metro Line
This is expected to cut travel time by nearly half and significantly reduce interchange-related delays.
Corridor-5 Station Coverage and Scale
Corridor-5 (Red Line) is one of the longest corridors under Chennai Metro Phase-II.
- Planned length: Madhavaram Milk Colony to Sholinganallur
- Total stations: ~45–48 stations (final count subject to CMRL revisions)
- Station mix: Predominantly elevated, with select underground and at-grade stations
- Major interchanges: Madhavaram Milk Colony, Koyambedu zone, Alandur, Sholinganallur
Once fully completed, the corridor will connect North, Central, and South Chennai through residential, commercial, and IT-driven zones.
Impact on Real Estate in the Corridor-5 Influence Zone
The extension of Corridor-5 up to Alandur strengthens connectivity across multiple residential belts and employment hubs. Areas with faster access to Anna Salai, the Airport, and major interchange stations are expected to see increased end-user demand.
The proposed Sholinganallur–Alandur metro extension improves real, day-to-day connectivity rather than just adding future promise. Direct access to a major interchange like Alandur strengthens end-user demand in nearby localities such as Madipakkam, Puzhuthivakkam, Adambakkam, and Ullagaram. Buyers should avoid speculative pricing and rely on verified approvals, actual transaction values, and confirmed timelines to assess true property potential.
