Why Land Surveys Matter

From Patta transfers and subdivisions to boundary marking and dispute resolution, official land surveys form the backbone of land ownership clarity in Tamil Nadu. Without them, property rights remain uncertain and urban planning suffers.

The government allows citizens to file for official land surveys directly through the e-Sevai portal, ensuring transparency and accountability.

Step-by-Step Guide to File a Surveyor Request Online

1. Login to e-Sevai

  • Visit www.tnesevai.tn.gov.in.
  • Login with your Citizen Access Number (CAN).
  • New users can create a CAN using Aadhaar and mobile number.

2. Select the Survey Service

  • Under Revenue Department Services, choose:
“Application for Survey / Subdivision / FMB Sketch.”

3. Fill in Property Details

  • District, Taluk, Village
  • Survey Number / Subdivision Number
  • Patta Number (if available)
  • Upload:
    • Sale Deed / Parent Document
    • Patta / Chitta / Adangal
    • Property Tax Receipt
    • Aadhaar proof

4. Pay the Fees

  • Fee depends on type of request (boundary marking, subdivision, or FMB copy).
  • Payment can be made via UPI, debit/credit card, or net banking.
  • Keep the Application ID for tracking.

5. Surveyor Assignment & Site Visit

  • Application is routed to the Taluk Survey Section.
  • Surveyor assigned → you receive SMS notification.
  • Surveyor visits with GPS/Total Station, Theodolite, or chain survey instruments.
  • Field boundaries measured → updated FMB sketch is prepared.

Timeline: How Long Should It Take?

  • Patta Transfer: 15 working days
  • Subdivision: 30 working days
  • Boundary Survey/FMB Sketch: Within 30 working days (SLA)
  • Maximum Legal Timeframe: 90 days — the surveyor must visit, complete, and sign off within this period.

What If the Surveyor Defaults?

If the surveyor does not act within 90 days:

  1. Track & Follow Up
    • Use your Application ID on the portal.
    • Visit the VAO or Taluk Office if no response by Day 30.
  2. File a Grievance
    • Escalate via e-Sevai grievance section or to the Tahsildar/RDO.
  3. Legal Remedy – Writ Petition
    • Under the Tamil Nadu Right to Services Act, 2014, you can file a writ petition in the High Court.
    • The court can compel the surveyor to finish the work and impose a penalty/fine for the delay.
