Hosur’s Evolution: From Industrial Powerhouse to Knowledge and IT Hub

Hosur, long recognized as a significant industrial city housing giants like TVS Motor, Ashok Leyland, Titan Company, Delta, Tata Electronics, and Sundram Fasteners, is set to undergo a massive transformation. With the proposed Knowledge Corridor and a state-of-the-art TIDEL Park, Hosur is poised to emerge as a strategic hub for IT, Research & Development (R&D), and Global Capability Centers (GCCs).

Hosur Knowledge Corridor: A Vision for the Future

In his budget speech, Minister Thangam Thenarasu announced the government’s ambitious plan to establish a Hosur Knowledge Corridor, designed to accommodate leading global IT firms, R&D centers, and GCCs. This development aims to complement the existing manufacturing sector by integrating cutting-edge innovation, automation, and research-driven solutions.

“With tremendous industrial growth, Hosur has the potential to become a hub for Global Capability Centers (GCCs) and research and development,” said Minister Thenarasu. “The Knowledge Corridor will be developed with world-class infrastructure to support IT firms and R&D operations.”

TIDEL Park: Boosting Hosur’s IT Landscape

A massive 5 lakh sq. ft. TIDEL Park, valued at ₹400 crore, is also planned for Hosur. According to the announcement, this initiative is expected to generate approximately 6,600 new jobs, providing employment opportunities for local talent and attracting tech firms looking to expand beyond Bengaluru.

Why is TIDEL Park in Hosur a Game-Changer?

  • Attracting IT Investments: Hosur has long struggled to attract IT firms despite its proximity to Bengaluru’s Electronic City. The new infrastructure will change this dynamic, reducing real estate and operational costs compared to Bengaluru’s skyrocketing rental rates.
  • Retaining Local Talent: Hosur produces a significant number of engineering graduates annually. With TIDEL Park offering job opportunities, many skilled professionals will no longer have to migrate for employment.
  • Infrastructure Growth: There are discussions about extending the Bengaluru Metro to Hosur, further integrating the city with the IT capital.

The Role of Global Capability Centers (GCCs) in Hosur’s Growth

Hosur’s Knowledge Corridor is expected to catalyze the entry of Global Capability Centers (GCCs), also known as Global In-house Centers (GICs) or Captive Centers. These strategic hubs support multinational corporations by offering services such as IT, R&D, analytics, finance, and customer support.

Why Companies Choose GCCs?

  • Access to Skilled Talent: Companies tap into a highly skilled engineering and IT workforce.
  • Cost Efficiency: Setting up in a Tier-2 city like Hosur reduces operational and labor costs while maintaining proximity to Bengaluru’s ecosystem.
  • Innovation and Market Expansion: GCCs play a key role in product development, market research, and business scalability.

Industry Leaders React: What Experts Say About the Hosur Transformation

S. Moothi, President of Hosur Small and Tiny Industries Association (HOSTIA), emphasized the need for innovation and research-driven manufacturing. “We are currently just producers of standard modules, but with the Knowledge Corridor, we can develop next-gen products that will redefine the industry.”

Similarly, S. Sundarayya, a Hosur Industries Association (HIA) committee member, highlighted the benefits of replicating Bengaluru’s Electronic City model. “Hosur has the potential to be the next tech hub, and the Knowledge Corridor will be instrumental in bringing IT firms to the city.”

Former HOSTIA President P. Velmurugan praised the GCC and R&D integration as a transformative shift for Hosur, moving beyond its identity as an automobile manufacturing hub to a technology-driven city.

Challenges & Infrastructure Needs for a Sustainable Growth Plan

While the announcement of the Knowledge Corridor and TIDEL Park is an exciting development, industry leaders stress the importance of a time-bound master plan.

“The city must expand its infrastructure rapidly to accommodate this industrial and tech boom,” said Velmurugan. Roads, public transportation, and power infrastructure need urgent upgrades to support global corporations and large-scale IT firms moving in.

The Future of Hosur’s Industrial & IT Ecosystem

The rise of automation, AI, and smart manufacturing means that Hosur’s traditional industries (like automobile manufacturing) must evolve. Global companies like Jaguar setting up in Ranipet signal an increasing demand for AI-driven automation. The Knowledge Corridor is expected to support this transformation by bridging manufacturing with advanced IT and research sectors.

To Sum Up

With the Knowledge Corridor and TIDEL Park, Hosur is on the brink of a major industrial revolution. The city’s strong industrial foundation, combined with cutting-edge IT infrastructure, will help it emerge as a self-sustaining ecosystem for global innovation.

As Hosur transitions into a Tier-2 technology hub, businesses and investors must take advantage of the strategic location, lower operational costs, and expanding talent pool to capitalize on future opportunities.
