Chennai Gets a ₹261 Crore Global Sports City Along OMR
In a landmark move to strengthen Tamil Nadu’s sports ecosystem, Chief Minister M. K. Stalin laid the foundation stone for a ₹261 crore Global Sports City in Chennai.
The project is coming up at Semmencherry, strategically located along the IT corridor of Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR), positioning it at the intersection of urban growth, connectivity, and modern infrastructure.
The announcement was made during the “Champions of Tamil Nadu – Celebrating Five Years of Sporting Excellence” event, highlighting the State’s long-term commitment to sports development.
Project Overview: 80 Acres of Integrated Sports Infrastructure
The Global Sports City will span over 80 acres in its first phase and will be developed by the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT).
Key Objectives:
- Create world-class training facilities
- Support Olympic and non-Olympic disciplines
- Enable hosting of national and international tournaments
- Promote sports tourism in Chennai
- Build a long-term sports ecosystem

Facilities Planned at the Global Sports City
The proposed facilities include:
- International-standard football stadium
- Shooting ranges and archery arenas
- Rowing and kayaking courses
- BMX cycling track and skating arenas
- Dedicated residential hostels for athletes
- High-performance training infrastructure
The integrated model ensures that athletes can train, stay, and compete within a single sports campus environment.
₹33.5 Crore Incentives for Medal Winners
Alongside the foundation ceremony:
- Approximately ₹33.5 crore in incentive grants was distributed.
- Over 1,172 medal-winning sportspersons received financial recognition.
- Appointment orders were issued to 178 sportspersons, including para-athletes, under the sports quota.
This signals a dual strategy: build infrastructure + reward talent.
