Eligible domestic connections up to 4 kW can now proceed through GPS and GIS verification without the usual preliminary field inspection.
Getting a new electricity connection for a house is set to become easier in Tamil Nadu. From August 28, 2026, TNPDCL will process eligible new domestic electricity applications without conducting the routine preliminary field inspection.
- The change is expected to:
- Reduce delays.
- Simplify the application process.
- Benefit households seeking connections with a sanctioned load of up to 4 kW.
- Applicants must:
- Meet the required eligibility conditions.
- Submit the necessary documents.
The change applies across Tamil Nadu, but only to a specific category of applications.
Who is eligible?
The simplified process applies to:
- New Low Tension (LT) domestic connections under Tariff IA
- Single-phase connections
- Connected load of up to 4 kW
- Connections requiring no extension or improvement work
In simple words, the property must already be in a location where electricity can be supplied without installing a new pole, extending the power line, upgrading a transformer or carrying out other major network work.
It does not presently cover High Tension (HT) connections, commercial connections, three-phase connections, additional-load requests or domestic loads above 4 kW.
How will the new process work?
The applicant must apply through the TNPDCL online portal and upload the required ownership or occupancy documents. The procedure will work as follows:
- Submit the application online: Enter the exact GPS location of the property where the electricity connection is required.↓
- TNPDCL conducts GIS verification: The submitted GPS coordinates are checked through TNPDCL’s Geographic Information System (GIS) application.↓
- Does the location match the property details?
- Yes: The application can proceed without the routine preliminary field inspection.
- No: The application is moved to the normal field-survey process.
- Upload valid documents: Applicants should upload clear and valid documents. Printed copies of documents already submitted online should not normally be required.↓
- Receive application updates: TNPDCL will send information about the application status, required corrections and other updates through SMS or email.↓
- Meter location verification: During installation, TNPDCL will record and verify the actual GPS location of the meter, even if the initial field inspection was skipped.↓
- Is the property ready for connection?
- If Yes: The connection process can continue.
- If No: The applicant may be given one month to rectify the shortcomings.
- If the issues are not corrected within one month: The application may be treated as lapsed or cancelled.
⭕ If the property location and documents are successfully verified, the application can proceed without the initial field survey.
Can the application be submitted from anywhere?
Yes. Since the application is online, it can be completed from any location.
However, the GPS coordinates entered must point to the exact property where the meter will be installed. A wrong GPS location may lead to a field inspection.
What documents may be required?
Applicants should keep the following documents ready:
- Recent photograph of the applicant
- Sale deed, partition deed, settlement deed, allotment letter, computerised patta, ownership certificate, court judgment or recent property-tax receipt
- Co-owner consent, legal-heir certificate or indemnity bond, where applicable
- Owner’s consent or valid proof of occupancy for tenants and non-owner applicants
The new procedure does not remove the existing ownership, occupancy, electrical-safety or eligibility requirements.
Why does this matter to homeowners?
Field inspection is one of the stages that can delay a straightforward electricity connection. GPS and GIS verification could reduce unnecessary site visits, paperwork and waiting time for eligible applicants.
It also shows why the property address, ownership documents, survey details and actual ground location must correctly correspond with one another.
Official implementation date
The go-live instruction was issued on August 25, 2026, for implementation from August 28, 2026. It specifically covers new LT domestic Tariff IA, single-phase connections up to 4 kW that require no extension or improvement work.
