Starting November 1, property buyers and sellers in Tamil Nadu will see a major change in how registration offices operate. The Commercial Taxes and Registration Department has officially announced the end of compulsory Saturday operations across 100 selected Sub-Registrar Offices (SROs).
This decision cancels a rule introduced in 2022 that kept busy registration offices open six days a week. Here is everything you need to know about why this policy was reversed and what it means for your next property transaction.
Why Is Tamil Nadu Ending Saturday Registrations?
The Saturday working policy was originally launched to help working professionals and individuals who struggled to visit SROs on weekdays. However, two major developments have led to its rollback:
1. Shift Toward Digital and Paperless Registration
Tamil Nadu is rapidly expanding its presence-less and paperless property registration system. Under this modern digital initiative, many eligible property transactions can be completed online without the buyer or seller physically visiting a Sub-Registrar Office. As online services become more widely available, the need for weekend physical appointments has reduced significantly.
2. Reducing Administrative Burden and Delays
Sub-registrars handle far more than just signing property deeds. They manage tax collections, audit records, resolve disputes, and oversee general office administration. Operating on Saturdays left little time for officers to clear pending backend work, which inadvertently led to administrative delays on weekdays.
What Does This Mean for Property Buyers and Sellers?
- Weekday-Only Operations: From November 1, all 100 affected Sub-Registrar Offices will function strictly from Monday to Friday.
- Online First: Buyers and sellers are encouraged to utilize the state’s official registration portals to complete eligible transactions digitally.
- Faster Processing: Clearer administrative schedules during weekdays are expected to improve the overall efficiency and quality of SRO services.
