North Chennai Set for a Major Infrastructure Overhaul

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has embarked on a significant transformation initiative under the North Chennai Development Plan. A total of 36 projects, with an estimated budget of ₹150 crore, have been approved to enhance public amenities and infrastructure. The move aims to rejuvenate the historically rich but underdeveloped regions of North Chennai, spanning areas from Tiruvottiyur to Thiru Vi Ka Nagar.

The North Chennai Development Plan is a joint effort between GCC and CMDA, with funding contributions of ₹150 crore from CMDA and an additional ₹7.58 crore from the Chennai Corporation. The Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department granted approval in October 2024, and implementation is now in full swing.

Key Projects and Infrastructure Upgrades

Among the planned projects, notable developments include:

  • Madhavaram Bus Terminus Expansion: Expected to improve public transport connectivity in the region, benefiting daily commuters, especially women and students.
  • Eco Park at Sanal Street, Tondiarpet: A modern, green recreational space set to be completed before the northeast monsoon.
  • Upgradation of Smoke-Free LPG Crematoria: Enhancing funeral facilities in Tondiarpet for an eco-friendly approach to last rites.
  • Flood Mitigation Measures: Implementation at 13 locations in Tondiarpet and 10 in Royapuram.
  • Modern Gymnasium on Wall Tax Road: Promoting health and fitness infrastructure.
  • Library and Public Health Centers: Improving educational and healthcare access for residents.

Government’s Vision for North Chennai

Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has accelerated project execution under the Vada Chennai Valarchi Thittam (VCVT), ensuring timely completion. Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) Minister P.K. Sekarbabu confirmed that 80% of projects are targeted for completion by December 2025.

Major Civic and Social Projects

Apart from transport and green spaces, the plan also includes:

  • Housing Projects: 776 tenements (stilt + 9 floors) on Stanley Medical College Road at ₹160 crore.
  • Water Supply Enhancement: Kannikapuram drinking water project at ₹59.15 crore.
  • Slaughterhouse Construction: Perambur Barracks Road project.
  • School and Maternity Hospital Upgrades: Chennai Schools and United India Colony Maternity Hospital, with a ₹9 crore budget.

With focused efforts on improving transportation, public health, education, and green spaces, North Chennai is on the path to becoming a more sustainable and well-connected region. The GCC’s ambitious plan is set to redefine urban living standards for residents, reinforcing the area’s historic significance while addressing modern civic needs.
