Chennai to Get a New Cable-Stayed Bridge Over Adyar River

In a move to reduce traffic congestion along Greenways Road and the Santhome stretch, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has proposed constructing a cable-stayed bridge connecting Srinivasapuram and Urur Kuppam. The civic body has invited tenders to select a consultant for preparing a Detailed Feasibility Report (DFR).

Replacing the Broken Bridge

The new bridge will replace the long-abandoned Broken Bridge, restoring connectivity between Besant Nagar and Foreshore Estate. Designed as a cable-stayed bridge, it will feature a deck supported by cables directly connected to towering pylons, a structural approach seen in landmarks like the Signature Bridge in Delhi and the Bandra-Worli Sea Link in Mumbai.

Aesthetic and Functional Considerations

A GCC official stated that a cable-stayed bridge was chosen for its aesthetic appeal, enhancing the view across one of Chennai’s prominent waterways. Unlike the old Broken Bridge, which was only a pedestrian footbridge, the new structure will accommodate vehicles. Details such as materials, cost estimates, and deck dimensions are yet to be finalized as the project remains in its early stages.

Feasibility Study and Engineering Consultancy

GCC has allocated ₹20 lakh for hiring a consultant to prepare the DFR. The report must comply with guidelines from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MORTH), the Indian Roads Congress (IRC), and the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). If required, international standards from the UK and the US may also be referenced.

The consultant is expected to form a multidisciplinary team including highway engineers, traffic specialists, structural engineers, bridge engineers, and quantity surveyors. Their responsibilities will include conducting topographical and traffic surveys, limited geotechnical investigations, analyzing traffic data, proposing alternative designs, securing approvals, and preparing general arrangement drawings.

Aims to Relieve Traffic Congestion in Key Areas

GCC anticipates that the bridge will alleviate traffic congestion along Greenways Road and the Santhome stretch in Mylapore, areas often clogged due to official residences, educational institutions, and recreational facilities. By providing an alternate route, the bridge will improve connectivity between Besant Nagar and Foreshore Estate, benefitting daily commuters.

Timeline for Consultancy Work

The consultancy phase will be executed in three stages:

  1. Phase 1: Submission of survey and investigation reports within 10 days.
  2. Phase 2: Submission and approval of alternative proposals within 20 days.
  3. Phase 3: Submission of final general arrangement drawings within 45 days.

The feasibility report will play a crucial role in shaping the final design and execution of the bridge, ensuring that the project meets both functional and aesthetic expectations.
