Chennai’s Key Suburban Rail Route Gets a New Timetable

Southern Railway has revised the timings of more than 200 Chennai suburban train services on the busy Chennai Beach–Tambaram–Chengalpattu route. The new weekday timetable will come into effect from June 1, 2026, while the revised Sunday timetable will be followed from June 7, 2026.

This is an important update for daily passengers because the Chennai Beach–Tambaram–Chengalpattu suburban corridor is one of the most used train routes in Chennai. It connects office-goers, students, residents, small business owners and homebuyers across South Chennai and the Chengalpattu-side growth belt.

Why Southern Railway Revised the Timings

Southern Railway said the change has been made to:

improve operational efficiency,
improve suburban commuter services,
streamline train movement on one of Chennai’s busiest suburban corridors,
help passengers plan journeys better under the revised schedule..

In simple words, the railway is trying to manage train movement better on a route that carries heavy daily passenger traffic. Some trains will now leave earlier, while others will leave later. For daily commuters, even a small change of 5 to 20 minutes can affect office travel, school timings, college schedules, connecting buses, metro links and last-mile transport.

Which Train Route Is Affected?

The main affected route is:

Chennai Beach – Tambaram – Chengalpattu

The revised timings also impact connected services towards Kancheepuram, Tirumalpur and Arakkonam.

This makes the update important not only for people living inside Chennai city, but also for commuters from suburban and fast-growing locations such as Tambaram, Chromepet, Pallavaram, Guduvancheri, Potheri, Maraimalai Nagar, Singaperumal Koil and Chengalpattu.

How Many Services Are Affected?

The revised timetable covers 106 weekday services and 97 Sunday services. This means more than 200 suburban EMU services are part of the revised schedule.

Passengers who regularly use the old timetable should check the revised timings before travelling from June 1 onwards. Sunday passengers should separately check the Sunday timetable from June 7.

Some Trains May Start Earlier or Later

One of the most important points for passengers is that the timing change is not only about trains being delayed. Some services may also depart earlier than before.

This means commuters cannot assume that their regular train will arrive at the same time as before. Anyone depending on a specific morning or evening train should check the revised timing before starting their journey.

This is not the full list of all 106 weekday and 97 Sunday services, but it gives passengers a useful reference for major services on the Chennai Beach–Tambaram–Chengalpattu route and connected sections towards Arakkonam and Tirumalpur.
