The proposed Chennai Metro Rail corridor connecting the airport and the Kalaignar Centenary Bus Terminus at Kilambakkam has received approval from the Union Cabinet, according to Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL).

The new metro project is expected to be implemented at an estimated cost of ₹9,000 crore and is seen as a major infrastructure upgrade for Chennai’s rapidly developing southern corridor.

15-Km Metro Corridor with 12 Stations Planned

According to CMRL officials, the proposed metro corridor will cover nearly 15 kilometres between Chennai International Airport and Kalaignar Centenary Bus Terminus.

The project will include 12 metro stations along the route, improving direct public transport connectivity between the airport and one of Tamil Nadu’s largest intercity bus terminals.

The corridor would play a key role in improving mobility for:

• Airport passengers
• Long-distance bus travellers
• Daily office commuters
• Residents of southern Chennai suburbs

DPR Submitted Earlier This Year

Officials stated that the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the proposed metro corridor was submitted to the Central Government in February this year. Following the submission, the Union Government reportedly prioritised the proposal for approval.

The metro line is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion on key southern Chennai stretches while also offering faster and more reliable connectivity to Kilambakkam.

Consultations Underway for Alignment and Station Planning

As part of the preparatory work, CMRL officials are currently conducting consultations with several infrastructure and government agencies to finalise:

• Metro alignment
• Station locations
• Technical infrastructure requirements
• Utility integration and road connectivity

Departments involved in the discussions include:

• Airport authorities
• National Highways Department
• Water Supply Board
• Other infrastructure agencies

Land Survey and Demarcation Work Completed

CMRL officials further confirmed that land survey and ¹demarcation work required for the project has already been completed.

Following formal clearance procedures from the Centre, the project is expected to move into the next phase involving implementation and construction activity.
