The long-pending expansion of Madurai Airport has entered a decisive phase in 2026. After more than 15 years of delay due to land acquisition disputes, the Madras High Court has directed residents occupying acquired land to vacate, clearing a major obstacle for runway expansion.

The project, originally conceptualized around 2009, could not proceed because a portion of the required land was not physically handed over despite compensation proceedings.

Now, with the court’s intervention, the expansion is closer to execution than ever before.

Why the Expansion Is Important

Madurai Airport currently operates with infrastructure limitations that restrict larger aircraft operations.

Approximately 300 to 350 families residing in Chinna Udaippu are affected by the eviction order.

Most of the families belong to the Scheduled Caste community, which added a social sensitivity dimension to the case.

The High Court has now ordered these residents to vacate within a stipulated time frame, allowing authorities to proceed with land handover.

Where Will the Families Be Relocated?

Rehabilitation Plan: Perungudi

The Tamil Nadu government has offered a structured relocation package:

• 2 cents of developed residential land per eligible family
• Location: Perungudi village near Madurai
• Allotment to be processed through the District Collector upon submission of consent
• Government-funded housing construction under the scheme Kalaignarin Kanavu Illam

Once families submit formal consent letters, land allotment will be completed and houses constructed at the government’s cost.

Some reports also indicate specific house-site allotments already identified for certain beneficiaries, with construction to follow.
