Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has floated a tender to prepare a Detailed Feasibility Report (DFR) and Detailed Project Report (DPR) for a water transport corridor from Ennore to Mamallapuram along the Buckingham Canal.

The consultancy is estimated to cost ₹7.43 crore and is expected to take about eight months. The selected consultant will first check whether passenger services are practical before preparing detailed designs, technical specifications and cost estimates.

What Will the Water Metro Study Examine?

The study will examine:

• Expected passenger demand
• Water depth and navigation conditions
• Flood risks and seasonal water-level changes
• Water quality and environmental impact
• Possible passenger terminals
• Connections with Metro Rail, suburban rail and other transport
• Project cost, financial viability and implementation plan

The reported length is not yet consistent. Some reports describe the corridor as approximately 70 km, while others mention 53 km or nearly 78 km. The exact study length should become clearer through CMRL’s official project documents.

Buckingham Canal Restoration Is the Biggest Challenge

The project cannot succeed without restoring the Buckingham Canal. Pollution, sewage discharge, encroachments, shallow stretches and changing water levels could make regular boat services difficult.

The study must therefore determine how the canal can be cleaned, restored and maintained as a safe transport corridor. This could also affect flood management, environmental protection, waterfront development and adjoining land.

What Does This Mean for Real Estate?

If implemented, the Water Metro could create a new north–south transport connection between Ennore, central Chennai and the ECR–Mamallapuram growth corridor.

However, this is still only a feasibility and DPR exercise. No stations, jetties or confirmed beneficiary areas have been announced. Property buyers should not pay a higher price based only on claims that a Water Metro station may come nearby.
