Chennai’s damaged roads could receive a major upgrade under a ₹150 crore road improvement proposal prepared by the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC). The first phase covers 780 roads spanning 160 km across all 15 zones, including both bus route roads and interior streets. Detailed project reports have been submitted to the Tamil Nadu government for administrative approval, according to reports published on September 24, 2026.

Which Roads Are Included in Chennai’s Upgrade Plan?

The proposed works cover 66 bus route roads measuring 45.13 km and 714 interior roads measuring 114.87 km. This means the programme includes neighbourhood streets alongside roads used by public transport. Selected damaged roads across Corporation Zones 1 to 15 form part of this first phase.

Road categoryRoads identifiedLength
Bus route roads6645.13 km
Interior roads714114.87 km

The reports reviewed do not provide a complete street-by-street list. Residents therefore cannot assume that every damaged road in their locality is included.

First Phase of a Larger ₹300 Crore Programme

The ₹150 crore proposal forms the first phase of a broader ₹300 crore road improvement programme for 2026–27. The larger announcement aims to upgrade 360 km of bus route and interior roads within Greater Chennai Corporation limits. The present proposal covers 160 km of that planned network.

Government Approval and Tenders Are the Next Steps

As on September reports, GCC had prepared the detailed project reports and forwarded them for government approval. The Tamil Nadu Urban Finance and Infrastructure Development Corporation (TUFIDCO) was examining the estimates.

Corporation Commissioner G. S. Sameeran said tenders would be invited after approval. Preparing project reports is therefore an important step, but it does not establish that road works have already begun.

Road Works Planned Before the Northeast Monsoon

Officials stated that they intended to take up the improvement works before the northeast monsoon. However, the reports do not confirm a completion date for all 780 roads. The monsoon reference should be understood as the Corporation’s stated target for taking up the works, subject to the approval and tender process.

What the Proposal Could Mean for Chennai Residents

If implemented well, repairing damaged roads could make daily travel more comfortable and improve access to homes, shops and workplaces. With 714 interior roads included, the proposal could benefit residents within neighbourhoods as well as commuters using bus routes.

The practical impact will depend on which streets are selected, the quality of the work and how well the roads are maintained afterwards. For residents, the next updates to watch are government sanction, tender announcements and the final list of roads scheduled for improvement.
