Chennai airport expansion plans have brought renewed attention to the longstanding 217-acre land-acquisition process in Manapakkam, Kolapakkam and Cowl Bazaar.

The government has announced plans to expand the existing airport. However, as of 5 October 2026, there is no update about this land acquisition through a new Government Order or Gazette notification.

Land Acquisition Moves Forward

District Revenue Officers and other officials have been appointed to handle the acquisition. An office is expected to function from the Alandur taluk office.

Status of the Latest Acquisition Update

The latest parcel-wise progress, completion status and any fresh acquisition orders for the 217 acres still require official confirmation.

The broader expansion announcement does not establish that all these parcels have been acquired, that compensation has been settled or that construction has begun. Directions for identifying and acquiring additional land also remain to be confirmed.

What Is Confirmed ?

In an Assembly announcement on 24 August 2026, the government proposed a fifth terminal on the northwestern side of Chennai airport, in coordination with the Airports Authority of India.

The proposed terminal is expected to add capacity for 20 million passengers annually. Road and flyover improvements were also announced to improve airport access.

An Acquisition Process Dating Back to 2007

In 2007, the government planned to acquire approximately 1,070 acres for Chennai airport expansion. About 853 acres were subsequently removed from the acquisition proposal, leaving approximately 217 acres within the process.

Removal from the proposal does not necessarily mean land was first taken over and later returned. It means the relevant parcels were excluded from that acquisition proposal.

Some properties in this belt were de-notified from the earlier scheme. The original acquisition records therefore need to be checked alongside subsequent release orders.

What Happens After Parandur’s Cancellation?

The government has announced that the proposed airport at Parandur will be dropped and that alternative locations will be assessed for Chennai’s second airport.

Expanding the existing airport and examining another location are both part of the announced approach to meeting future passenger and cargo demand.

What Should Property Owners and Buyers Check?

A property’s location in Manapakkam, Kolapakkam or Cowl Bazaar does not automatically mean it is included in the acquisition.

Before buying, selling or developing land, check:

  • The exact survey number and subdivision against the acquisition schedule.
  • The official land plan showing the affected boundary.
  • Any de-notification or release order applicable to the parcel.
  • The latest acquisition proceedings, compensation award and possession records.

Obtain the current position from the Special District Revenue Officer or Special Tahsildar handling the Chennai Airport Expansion Scheme. Older notifications can help trace the history, but they cannot establish the latest status on their own.

Verified.RealEstate’s land-record resources can help you identify relevant acquisition notifications and property details. Have the records reviewed and confirm the latest position with the acquisition office before making a property decision.

LandLens Research: Official Acquisition Records

LandLens research identified the 2018 Kolapakkam acquisition notification and a related 2021 order covering specified lands in Cowl Bazaar. As of 5 October 2026, the material reviewed contained no new parcel-specific government notification confirming an update, cancellation or completion of acquisition under the 2018 order. Property owners should check their exact survey number and subdivision against subsequent Gazette notifications to establish the current status.
